Foundry

When one of Australia's leading design schools needed a highly adaptable, super fast website solution - they turned to us.

Design first

When Chris and the team at Foundry approached us, their main objective was to provide all team members with the ability to edit website content while ensuring the UI design was strictly maintained.

We accomplished this (and more) by implementing a modular block system to provide maximum flexibility. Any block can be placed in any order on any page, whilst ensuring the look and feel of the site is kept within the brand guidelines.

Images and speed

Image ratios and compression have always been a challenge for websites, especially getting the user to know exactly how to correctly ratio and compress the image. We wanted to take ownership in this area and provide toolsets that allow freedom but maintain the strict design standard Foundry wanted to maintain.

All the uploaded images need to be compressed to a reasonable size then uploaded via the admin interface, the backend then creates all the versions of the file the site requires ready for use. Also, we provided a focal point so an area of the uploaded image can be selected as the most important part. The system will always try to maintain this in the viewport to the end-user.

Finally, we focused on site speed as the design was very image and video-heavy. With a lot of love and effort, we found the balance between speed and function.

Evolution of the framework

Foundry were one of the first clients on our Round Table Framework and a lot has changed between now and then. Still, to this day, the flexibility and stability of the platform has performed exceptionally well, with uptime of 99.99% over 4+ years.

New layouts are easily achieved by the Foundry team, simply by creating new pages with any or all of the carefully designed blocks. The Foundry team have been able to change the look and feel of the site on a near yearly basis without investing large amounts of capital in “rebuilding” the site.

The next generation of the Round Table Framework could only have achieved what it has to offer today from the successful project we achieved with the Foundry team.
